A successful birding day at the beach

Sunday September 20, 2026, was again spent sea bird watching from the beach of the Frisian island Schiermonnikoog. The wind direction and wind force were very promising. This video shows some of the birds that passed by. Besides the Arctic and Long-tailed Skuas, we also saw a Great Skua, but it was too far for reasonable images, and besides the Manx Shearwater, also several Sooty Shearwater passed by, mostly at great distance, but some could be seen reasonably well through the spotting scope. We also got our eyes very briefly (too briefly!) on what was probably a Balearic Shearwater. A real pity that we did not pick it up earlier. Other birds that we saw but that are not in the video were several Leach's Storm Petrels, Kittiwakes and Red-throated Divers. All in all, a fantastic birding day at the beach.
