More than two thousand years ago, the Xiongnu created the first great steppe empire on China’s northern frontier. Under Modu Chanyu, previously divided nomadic groups were united into a powerful military confederation that dominated Mongolia and threatened the newly established Han Dynasty.
In 200 BCE, Emperor Gaozu personally led an army against the Xiongnu but was surrounded at Baideng. After narrowly escaping, the Han government adopted the heqin policy, sending diplomatic gifts and imperial brides to preserve peace. For decades, the Xiongnu raided Han territory while negotiating with China as a rival imperial power.
But under Emperor Wu, the Han abandoned appeasement and launched an enormous military counteroffensive. Generals such as Wei Qing and Huo Qubing led armies deep into the steppe, captured the Hexi Corridor, and weakened Xiongnu control over Central Asian trade routes.
The conflict continued for generations, draining the resources of both empires. Internal succession disputes eventually divided the Xiongnu, while some groups submitted to Han authority and others continued resisting from the northern steppe.
This documentary explores the complete history of the Xiongnu Empire—from Modu Chanyu and the Battle of Baideng to the Han–Xiongnu Wars, the struggle for the Silk Road, and the confederation’s eventual fragmentation.
How did a steppe empire force Han China into submission—and how did the Han finally turn the war around?
