In January 1968, four hundred U.S. Marines of India and Mike Companies, 3rd Battalion, 26th Marines, held the most remote and exposed outpost of the Khe Sanh Combat Base: Hill 881 South. For 77 days they were cut off, shelled, and sniped at by two N.V.A. divisions — resupplied only by a helicopter tactic so precise it became known as the "Super Gaggle." This is the firsthand account of Captain William H. Dabney, commander of India Company, who held Hill 881 South from the first contact on January 20, 1968, through the end of the siege — later awarded the Silver Star and, in 2005, the Navy Cross for his actions there.
