WAKE HER IF YOU DARE Mama said, “Wake me up at three.” Like that was no big deal. Three kids froze in the doorway Like we’d just been handed a will. Nobody volunteered. Everybody found the floor. Suddenly we all remembered Somewhere else we should be more. One got nominated. One got pushed ahead. The other two were halfway gone Before a word was said. Don’t wake her early. Don’t wake her late. Don’t stand there staring And tempt your fate. You get one chance, You say it with care— Mama’s taking a nap. Wake her if you dare. You’d creep into the bedroom, Stay close enough to run, Say, “Mom… it’s time to wake up,” Then pray your job was done. Too early? Wrong. Too late? Wrong. Right on time? Still risky. There were no guarantees When Mama woke up cranky. One eye would crack open. You’d question every choice. You’d hear that low, suspicious, Half-awake Mama voice. And every kid knew instantly: Retreat. Don’t wake her early. Don’t wake her late. Don’t stand there staring And tempt your fate. You get one chance, You say it with care— Mama’s taking a nap. Wake her if you dare. Now I made one mistake When I should’ve known better. I didn’t leave. I stood there. Like an idiot. And stared at her. One eye opened. Then came the question: “What the hell are you staring at?” Now any sensible teenager Would have backed out through the door. But apparently that afternoon Sense had left me long before. I said, “I’m just waiting for your head To start spinning all around, Then you’ll shoot peas through your nose And I’ll know you’re awake now.” Silence. There was a sound. I swear there was. And after all these years— I still don’t know If Mama laughed… or growled. Maybe both. We loved her. We really did. But nap time had its laws. Three children understood them Without ever needing cause. You didn’t poke the dragon. You didn’t test your luck. You woke her when she asked you— Then you got the hell out. Don’t wake her early. Don’t wake her late. Don’t stand there staring And tempt your fate. Say what you came for, Then clear the air— Mama’s taking a nap. Wake her if you dare. Don’t wake her early. Don’t wake her late. Don’t make eye contact And seal your fate. If one of us has to do it— I nominate Claire. Mama’s taking a nap. Wake her if you dare. And if she asks, “What the hell are you staring at?” Do not answer like I did. Just run.
