South Africa is emerging as a major hub for synthetic drug trafficking and manufacturing on the African continent. According to analysis by a research group on global organised crime, the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organised Crime and the Enact Africa Organised Crime Index, South Africa faces the most pervasive synthetic drug market in Africa. This comes after law enforcement agencies are dismantling a sequence of massive operations, showcasing the geographical spread of these operations across the country's interior. On Thursday, police arrested five people at a multi-million rand drug manufacturing laboratory at a farm in Krugersdorp. On Wednesday, police discovered a drug manufacturing operation in Hartbeespoort Dam in the North West, believed to be a multimillion-rand Mandrax laboratory. To discuss this further, we are now joined by a senior analyst at the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organised Crime, Michael McLaggan.
