Nobody knew where it came from. It simply appeared one day in the basement, an anomalous control panel embedded in the wall with no obvious power source and an interface that nobody could understand. Around it, the wall itself was transformed from brick and plaster into a smooth plastic-like surface. More concerning was that the transformation appeared to be spreading. Then someone stood close enough. Not a sound exactly. A rhythm. The panel awakened with a faint crimson pulse, synchronising itself to the observer's heartbeat before settling into a slow, hypnotic cadence. Instruments detected nothing unusual, yet everyone who went near it experienced the same repeating beat. It wasn't heard in the conventional sense. They felt it playing in their bones. Some tapped a foot. Others nodded in time. A few simply burst out dancing without knowing why. Before long, they had forgotten why they had approached the panel at all. All the while, the plastic-like material continued to grow, allowing the device to extend its reach just a little further, completely unnoticed by those who had fallen under its spell.
