Vali once tucked Ravana under his arm — the ten-headed Ravana, in one armpit. Before sunrise he touched all four oceans. He never lost a fight. Then an arrow came from behind a tree, and the archer was Rama. Why? The full story of Vali, king of the vanaras, in Hindi: how strong Vali was (the four oceans, Dundubhi, the sage Matanga's curse, and the ride he gave Ravana), Mayavi's cave and the year inside it, Sugriva's boulder, the brother thrown out in a single cloth, Rama's promise and the seven trees, two brothers like twins, Tara's warning, the arrow from behind the tree, the dying Vali's question to Rama, Rama's answer, and the golden garland that does not stay with the dead. The Short that raised the question:    • बाली कितना ताक़तवर था?   Retold from the Ramayana of Valmiki, in M. N. Dutt's translation (1891–94, public domain): Kishkindha Kanda 5, 9–12, 15–18, 22–26; the Vali–Ravana episode from Uttara Kanda 34. The "half the strength" boon is not in Valmiki, and the film does not tell it. Rama's reasons are the ones he gives himself in Kishkindha Kanda 18. Modern measurements are our conversions. Next story: Jatayu — the sixty-thousand-year-old vulture who took on Ravana alone.
