Lewes is usually a quiet, historic market town in East Sussex, but every year on 5th November it transforms into a spectacular sea of fire for the world-famous Lewes Bonfire Night. Known internationally as one of the most intense and traditional Bonfire Night celebrations in the UK, Lewes Bonfire is about far more than the Gunpowder Plot of 1605 and Guy Fawkes. At its heart, the night is an act of remembrance. Between 1555 and 1557, 17 Protestant martyrs were burned at the stake in Lewes during the Marian persecutions under the reign of Mary I. Their sacrifice is remembered every year and remains central to the meaning of Lewes Bonfire Night. In this video, we join bonfire societies from across Sussex as they parade through the ancient streets of Lewes, carrying flaming torches, burning crosses, and historic tableaux. We then visit all six Lewes Bonfire firesites — South Street, Southover, Cliffe, Waterloo, Commercial Square, and Lewes Borough — to witness their epic bonfires and spectacular firework displays. 🎆 Featuring all six firework displays, traditional processions, and the unique atmosphere that makes Lewes Bonfire 2025 unlike any other Guy Fawkes Night event in England.
