The work is dedicated to Friederike Müller, one of Chopin's favourite pupils, who studied with him from 1839 to 1841 . Franz Liszt reportedly gave her the nickname "Mademoiselle opus quarante-six" . The Allegro de concert retains clear concerto characteristics: a lengthy 40-bar orchestral introduction, a cadenza-like solo entrance, and alternating tutti and solo sections . The form combines elements of both concerto and sonata-allegro structure .
