Dr. Gero spent years alone in a mountain lab doing things the Red Ribbon Army was never around to authorise. This is what he was actually doing to people in there. The Red Ribbon Army is usually treated as a joke. A criminal organisation a small child dismantled in the original Dragon Ball. But one of their scientists never stopped working. He took the grudge into a mountain and turned it into a research programme, and the material for that programme was human beings. Sixteen numbered attempts came before Android 17. Most of them did not survive. This is Episode 0 of The Red Ribbon Files, the series where I go through what Gero built, who he built it out of, and what he was still working on when he died.
