How Do You Quilt a Quilt This Special? Live Free Motion on an English Paper Pieced Top

Live & Unscripted: Free Motion Quilting an English Paper Pieced Quilt (“Smitten” by Tales of Cloth) Today I’m quilting a hand-pieced, English paper pieced quilt top that belongs to a very dear friend. The pattern is “Smitten” by Tales of Cloth. We met over quilts, and we’ve been close friends for fifteen years. She pieced this top over a period of about two years, in fabrics and colors she loved. It was her gift to herself during a hard season of cancer treatment; a way to stitch strength, resilience, and healing into something beautiful. The last time I visited, she handed it to me to quilt. She passed away not long after. So this is special, and it’s hard. I’m finishing it for her, and for her family. A few things we’ll likely get into: basting an English paper pieced quilt trimming the uneven edges choosing an edge-to-edge design, and changing thread colors to follow the quilt’s color flow, from purples through pinks and golds into greens and teals the free motion quilting itself As always, this is live and unscripted. I talk while I work, so you’ll hear my thinking as I make decisions (and sometimes remake them).
