Now picture it floating alone in black water, nearly 6,500 feet down, watching you. That eye belongs to the colossal squid, and almost everything about this animal looks like a mistake. Its brain is shaped like a doughnut, with its own throat threaded through the hole in the middle. Its blood runs blue. Its body is packed with a chemical that smells like cleaning fluid and tastes disgusting to anything that tries to eat it. Every hook on its arms can spin in a full circle, built for a kind of combat nobody has ever filmed. For 100 years, humans only knew this animal from broken beaks pulled out of whale stomachs. Then in 2025, a submarine camera caught one alive for the first time, and it looked like it was made of glass. Today we go inside the body of the strangest predator in the Southern Ocean. We open its skull, study its blood, and ask why evolution built something this bizarre. From its eyes to its hooks to the one meal that can feed it for 8 months, get ready. We begin.
