Both are love songs about the figure we create in our imagination. However, Plainlight Reverie takes a nihilistic view, treating isolation as an unending certainty. As the listener imagines their lover, the song ultimately tells them that this person is only an illusion, existing solely in dreams. In contrast, Before We Meet expresses faith that the person we imagine is a reflection of the life God has intended for us and our future families. Before We Meet is a prayer that expresses to God the desires of the heart that He has placed within us. It is not a song of lust, like many heard on the radio, proclaiming what a spouse or children can do for our happiness or status. Instead, it is a song of love that subverts that idea by asking, What can we do for our spouse and our children? The song imagines serving, protecting, and nurturing our families. It begins with longing, followed by the frustration inflicted by the season of waiting. It then returns to prayer as the listener enters into a conversation with Jesus, openly sharing the desires of their heart. Once again, the listener cries out, worn down by the call to remain patient as God asks them to wait. Unlike Plainlight Reverie, which ends with the despairing thought, "Look at your fake imaginary partner—that will never happen," Before We Meet concludes with the peace that comes from trusting in the Lord's plan. At its core, Before We Meet is about enduring faith. No matter what happens in the world or how life may shake us, we can trust God to care for us.
