Can celebrities legally stop AI-generated deepfakes, fake endorsements, impersonation and the unauthorised commercial use of their names, faces and voices? The Delhi High Court has issued notices in personality rights petitions filed by actors and public figures Kangana Ranaut and Vijay Deverakonda, bringing an important question into focus: where should the law draw the line between protecting a person's identity and preserving freedom of expression? In Vijay Deverakonda’s case, the actor has raised concerns over impersonation, fake websites, misleading endorsements, AI-generated and digitally manipulated content, and the unauthorised use of his personality attributes to sell merchandise such as T-shirts and mugs. His plea names online platforms and other parties and seeks takedown orders and interim protection. In Kangana Ranaut’s case, her counsel raised concerns over fake news and obscene AI-generated material. During the hearing, the Court questioned whether some of the material highlighted was merely satire. Her counsel did not press for the removal of that satirical content at this stage. The Court issued summons in the suit and notice on the request for an interim injunction. The proceedings raise important legal questions about personality rights, privacy, impersonation, AI deepfakes, fake celebrity endorsements, online content moderation and freedom of speech. But there is a crucial distinction: issuing notice does not mean the Court has finally ruled in favour of either actor. Nor does it mean every meme, parody, criticism or AI-generated image is automatically illegal. The legal assessment depends on the nature of the content, its context, the manner in which identity is used and the relief sought. In this video, Adv. Vaibhav M. Agrawal explains both cases in simple Hinglish, the meaning of personality rights, the legal concerns surrounding AI deepfakes and fake endorsements, and why satire and criticism require separate consideration. The matters are listed for further hearings in February 2027.
