Close your eyes. It's the year 1000, and the greatest city in Western Europe is Córdoba, capital of al-Andalus. Walk with us across the Roman bridge, through the forest of columns in the Great Mosque (enlarged by almost a third in 987–988), past the market of Muslims, Christians and Jews, and into the world of Almanzor, the library of al-Hakam II, the palace-city of Madinat al-Zahra, and the surgeon al-Zahrawi. Then see why a Saxon nun called this city "the ornament of the world".

Where the numbers are uncertain, we say so. Córdoba's population (estimates run from about 100,000 to 400,000), the 400,000-book library, Almanzor's ~56 campaigns and the counts of baths all come from medieval chroniclers or modern estimates, not exact records. "Paved, lamp-lit streets" is treated as a legend: we found no source from the time.
