Baton Pass is a category where each Important Battle has to be defeated with a different Evolutionary Line. Any other battle can be defeated with any Pokémon. In Crystal (as well as in Gold/Silver), there are 22 Important Battles : 16 Gym Leaders, Elite 4 members, Champion, and Red. An Evolutionary Line is the list of a given Pokémon with its previous and next evolutions.
