Decades ago, calling food "addictive" was a fringe idea. Today it's one of the most contested questions in psychology and neuroscience. This documentary traces the complete history: Theron Randolph coining the term "food addiction" in 1956 at an allergy clinic, food scientist Howard Moskowitz engineering the "bliss point" for the food industry in the 1970s, Nora Volkow's brain-imaging discovery that obese brains show dopamine D2 receptor patterns resembling drug addiction, and Yale psychologist Ashley Gearhardt's 2009 creation of the Yale Food Addiction Scale — the first tool to actually measure it. We also cover why the DSM-5 still refuses to recognize food addiction as an official diagnosis, and the "eating addiction" counter-argument from researcher Johannes Hebebrand. This is a science and history explainer, not medical or dietary advice — if you're concerned about your own relationship with food, please talk to a qualified professional.
