What did ancient humans actually do after the sun went down?
40,000 years ago, there were no phones, electric lights, clocks, or glowing cities. Night meant hours of real darkness, dangerous predators, firelight, stories, music, dancing, and people sleeping close together.
In this video, we explore what prehistoric nights may have really looked like — from firelight storytelling and ancient cave art to sleep patterns, natural night watches, and the surprising ways our modern nights still resemble those of our ancestors.
We’ll look at research on the Ju/’hoansi, Hadza, San, and Tsimane, including why nighttime storytelling became so important and why entire camps may have rarely been asleep at the same time.
Maybe the strangest part is how familiar it all feels.
40,000 years ago: firelight and stories.
Today: screens and videos.
If you lived in an ancient camp, who would you be — the storyteller, the dancer, or the one staying awake on night watch?
