Russia has just held what many critics describe as a sham parliamentary election. Putin's United Russia party secured nearly 60% of the vote, paving the way for another term of Kremlin dominance. But what has Vladimir Putin actually done for Russia over the past 26 years? “More or less what Hitler did for Germany,” says Ilya Ponomarev, Chairman of the Congress of People's Deputies of Russia, on World Talks. According to Ponomarev, Putin first ended the chaos of the 1990s, then built an increasingly authoritarian system, ultimately leading the country into a major war. Ponomarev argues that Russia's political opposition inside parliament remains largely controlled by the Kremlin, with even the largest opposition parties playing a predetermined role in a tightly managed political system.
