Bishop Dag tells the story of a couple he kept urging to come and register their relationship. They kept assessing each other for two years, saw each other's flaws, and broke up - because they never signed anything. He contrasts that with doing the right thing: signing the papers, going through the formalities, just like Jesus himself went to John the Baptist and said let us do what is right. Then he lands on a moment everyone at a wedding recognises - the signing downstairs. He calls it the ugliest part of the ceremony because it basically says I do not believe what you just said upstairs, so prove it with paperwork. The point is sharp: love without commitment is just words, and the formalities exist to keep you in when feelings want to pull you out.
