Iran-Pakistan-Saudi Alignment? Trump, Munir & India’s BIG Challenge | Qamar Agha | Amber Zaidi

Iran is facing one of its most complicated geopolitical moments as the United States prepares a major new sanctions campaign, Pakistan’s Field Marshal Asim Munir travels to Tehran, and the newly created Makkah Joint Defence Agreement reshapes the security conversation in West Asia. The Trump administration has announced new financial sanctions targeting Iran and warned countries and businesses maintaining economic ties with Tehran that they could face secondary sanctions. Iran, meanwhile, has threatened retaliation against countries cooperating with the US pressure campaign. At the same time, Asim Munir is in Tehran as Pakistan pushes for a diplomatic route toward ending the US-Iran confrontation. Reuters reports that Munir spoke with Donald Trump before his Tehran trip and that Trump urged Pakistan to use its influence to encourage Iran to return to negotiations. Munir's discussions are also expected to touch on the Houthi issue and the recently signed Makkah defence agreement. Then comes the biggest question: What exactly is the Makkah Pact's relationship with Iran? Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Pakistan signed the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement on August 7, 2026. The agreement states that an armed attack against one of the three countries will be regarded as an attack against all three and describes collective deterrence and defence cooperation as central objectives. Donald Trump has publicly praised the Makkah pact and welcomed the idea of regional countries taking greater responsibility for their own security. Meanwhile, reports have claimed that Iran could be invited to join the pact. But there is an important developing contradiction: Iranian officials have denied receiving a formal invitation, while other reports say an invitation was conveyed and is being considered. That raises the central question of this video: Is the Makkah Pact actually designed to contain Iran — or could bringing Iran into a regional security framework become a pathway toward de-escalation? Pakistan's own Foreign Ministry describes the Makkah agreement as defensive and says Pakistan is simultaneously pursuing dialogue and diplomatic efforts concerning the wider Gulf and Middle East crisis. It has also confirmed discussions with Iranian officials about regional peace and stability. The bigger story, therefore, may not simply be Trump vs Iran. It may be the emergence of a completely new West Asian security equation involving Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, Pakistan, Iran, the United States and Israel — with Pakistan attempting to position itself as an important diplomatic bridge.
