FANTASIA SURABAYA NO. 5 for piano solo - Pour Kay (2025)

The number five is called Pour Kayleen, to dedicate specially to a young pianist named Kayleen Selyna Gunawan or simply Kay in short. She is a musically gifted in piano. Intrestingly the composer met her and her father personally in December 2025 though she followed his instagram account before the meeting. The composition is actually written on the request by Kay’s father Budi Gunawan to be played in her church during the Christmas service in 2026 before the service began. He asks the composer to give some vibes of the Christmas song inside. In response, the composer uses the elements of any Christmas songs imbued in this piece but not by exactly copying the song’s melody, rather than he alters the melody so that it would sound so christmasy in essence, though the Surabayan character remains intact. In order to do so, the composer uses some elements of Modere and Anime from Sonatine’s Ravel and several impressionistic elements of Debussy’s Pour invoquer Pan, dieu du vent d'été of Éphigraphes Antiques, where the Veni, Veni, Emmanuel occurs towards the end of the piece. ABOUT THE PIANIST Kayleen Selyna Gunawan was born in 24th September 2013. She’s currently learning piano under Mr. Handy and serving in GKT Hosana Bumi Permai as a church pianist in the Sunday School.
