Nikolai Yezhov ran Stalin's secret police at the height of the Great Purge. In little more than a year, nearly 700,000 people were shot. Then the system he built turned on him, and Stalin had him erased from history, even from photographs.
This is the full story of the "vanishing commissar": a quiet, barely educated tailor's apprentice from the edge of the Russian Empire who rose to become head of the NKVD, one of the most feared men of the 20th century, and finally a man whose name the Soviet state tried to make disappear.
Built on archival research and the work of historians, this documentary follows Yezhov from his hidden origins to his fall, his secret trial, and his execution in 1940. The NKVD's chief executioner, Vasily Blokhin, most likely carried it out.
