At three in the morning, a small man tramples a child in a London street and keeps walking. When the crowd corners him, he doesn't run — he offers to pay. With a cheque signed in a name everyone recognises. You think you know this story. Stevenson didn't write it that way. He wrote a detective story: for two thirds of the book nobody knows who Hyde is — not the lawyer investigating him, not the reader. The word "transformation" doesn't appear until the final pages.
