The canonical Gospels give us only a glimpse of Mary, but the Proto Gospel of James (also called the Protoevangelium of James) opens a vivid window onto her childhood, miracles, family, and why she is venerated as the perpetual virgin. In this episode of Misquoting Jesus, Dr. Bart Ehrman returns to unpack the origins, influence, and theological innovations of this ancient gospel. What’s in the Proto Gospel of James? Bart and Megan begin with the basics: when and where was this gospel written? Bart explains it was most likely composed in the late second century in the Greek-speaking eastern part of the Roman Empire—about 100 years after the New Testament Gospels.
