Based on the recollections of Graceland cook and maid Nancy Rooks, this is the story of the last morning of Elvis Presley’s life, told by the woman who was working downstairs that day.
On August 16, 1977, Nancy had worked for Elvis for ten years. Somewhere between 9:30 and 10 that morning, she heard a loud noise upstairs and believed Elvis and his fiancée, Ginger Alden, were arguing. A member of the staff walked up to the doors of Elvis’s suite, learned Ginger was still inside, and came back down. For almost four hours, no one went in. Then, at ten minutes to two, the intercom rang.
In this RetroWaves documentary, we follow the final hours of the King of Rock and Roll: the late-night dentist visit, the last racquetball game at Graceland, the last song he sang at the piano, and the morning he asked only for water. We also hear Ginger Alden’s different memory of those same hours, and why the two accounts have never been reconciled.
This is not a story about blame. It is about a house built to protect one man, where everyone believed someone else was watching, and about the people who carried that day with them for the rest of their lives, including the maid who stayed on at Graceland for years.
