A quiet Wainwright-inspired walk across Fell End Clouds in the Howgill Fells Discover one of the quietest and most beautiful short walks in the Howgills—a circular route over Fell End Clouds, inspired by Wainwright’s classic walk from his book Walks on the Howgill Fells (Walk No. 26). Located between Kirkby Stephen and Sedbergh, this 2.5 to 3-mile walk is full of character, history, and breath-taking limestone scenery. We begin near the old quarry on The Street and make our way up onto the exposed limestone of Fell End Clouds, passing weathered cairns, ancient dry stone walls, and a small natural cave noted by Wainwright himself. Though the route deviates slightly from his original, it captures the same charm, solitude, and wild spirit of the Howgill Fells. 🎨 Along the way, I stop to sketch, reflect on the history of the land, and explore fascinating features like old lime kilns, shake holes, and Wainwright’s “solitary sycamore.” Even in flat light and low cloud, the landscape here is full of atmosphere and quiet wonder.
