Air is drawn into the air inlet of the gas turbine and is compressed by the multi-stageaxial-flow compressor. The compressed air is directed into the combustion chamber ina steady flow. Fuel is injected into the pressurized air within the annular combustionchamber. During the gas turbine start cycle, this fuel/air mixture is ignited, andcontinuous burning is maintained as long as there is adequate flow of pressurized airand fuel. The hot, pressurized gas from the combustion chamber expands throughand drives the turbine, dropping in pressure and temperature as it exits the turbine.The gas turbine requires approximately one-fourth of the total air it compresses tocompletely combust the supplied fuel. The excess air is used to cool the combustionchamber and mixes with the combustion products to reduce the gas temperature atthe inlet to the first-stage turbine.During the engine start cycle, a torch aimed into the combustion chamber and fed bya separate fuel line is lit by a torch igniter plug. The torch ignites the fuel/air mixtureentering the combustion chamber where continuous burning is initiated.
