Fairest Dream, Mere Illusion Life is but an empty dream at last, But a lone shadow glimpsed as fleeting forms go past, But a white steed's gallop through a dream—so fast, Where some encounters in the dreaming are cast. They say all things are void and vain, They say the sea of suffering knows no wane, They say when joy is yours, then joy attain— Yet rarest is a heart at peace, serene, sane Each day you force yourself to wear A radiant smile beyond compare, How many times, wronged and in despair, You dared not make your grievance heard in air. You let the tears you shed be hidden there In the night wind's pretext—too charming to bear— While deep within, your sorrow's tide runs high, And who, O who, can understand it—who, and why? Life is but an empty dream at last, But a lone shadow glimpsed as fleeting forms go past, But a white steed's gallop through a dream—so fast, Where some encounters in the dreaming are cast. They say all things are void and vain, They say the sea of suffering knows no wane, They say when joy is yours, then joy attain— Yet rarest is a heart at peace, serene, sane~~~
