How do we decide which predictors should be included in a statistical model? In this video, we explore variable selection — the process of identifying which variables provide useful information for explaining or predicting an outcome. Including every available predictor is not always a good idea. Irrelevant variables can increase model complexity, make interpretation harder, and potentially reduce predictive performance. On the other hand, removing important predictors can lead to an incomplete or poorly specified model. Topics include: • What variable selection is • Why variable selection matters • Relevant vs irrelevant predictors • Model complexity and interpretability • The problem with including too many variables • Comparing models with different predictor sets • Forward selection • Backward elimination • Stepwise selection • Information-criterion-based variable selection • Regularization and shrinkage • Bayesian approaches to variable selection • Prior distributions for regression coefficients • Variable inclusion probabilities • Prediction vs explanation • Limitations of automatic variable selection The central question is: Which predictors contain enough information to justify keeping them in the model? Variable selection involves balancing several goals: Model fit + Simplicity + Interpretability + Predictive performance A larger model may fit the observed data better simply because it has more flexibility, but that does not necessarily mean every included variable is useful. In Bayesian modelling, variable selection can also be approached probabilistically. Instead of simply declaring a variable “included” or “excluded,” we can express uncertainty about whether a predictor belongs in the model and use posterior information to evaluate its importance. Variable selection is therefore closely related to model selection, shrinkage, regularization, and predictive modelling.
