In 1602, buying a stake in the Dutch East India Company meant committing money to voyages you might never see — and not being able to simply take it back when you needed it.
This is the story of what a VOC subscription actually gave an investor: a receipt, a claim on a distant trade enterprise, a long lock on capital, and eventually a way to sell that claim to someone else. From Amsterdam's 1,143 early investors to the payment calls and ledger transfers that made liquidity possible, this episode follows the economics behind one of history's most consequential ownership experiments.
The film also keeps the broader context in view: the VOC's trade system was bound to coercive power and exclusion, not merely commercial innovation.
