15 ration meals British families lived on in the Second World War, from potato floddies to Woolton pie. Every one still works today, and each comes with what it costs now.
From 1940 to 1954, every family in Britain lived on a ration book. One grown-up got 4 oz of bacon, 2 oz of butter, 2 oz of cheese and one egg a week, if the hens were laying. Our mums made it stretch with carrots, potatoes and a lot of imagination.
THE 15 MEALS
15. Potato floddies (about 25p a plate, 35¢)
14. Mock banana sandwiches (about 25p a round, 35¢)
13. Carrot cookies (about 3p each, 5¢)
12. Dried egg on toast (about 60p, 80¢)
11. Toad in the hole (about 70p a plate, 95¢)
10. Corned beef hash (about £1 a plate, $1.35)
9. Bread pudding (about 20p a square, 25¢)
8. Homity pie (about 30p a slice, 40¢)
7. Stuffed hearts (about £1 a plate, $1.35)
6. Rabbit stew (about £1.70 a plate, $2.30)
5. The eggless sponge (about 10p a slice, 15¢)
4. Mock goose (about 45p a plate, 60¢)
3. Carrot Christmas pudding (about 20p a slice, 25¢)
2. Woolton pie (about 50p a plate, 65¢)
1. Fish and chips, never rationed (about £1.70 a plate at home, $2.30)
ONE GROWN-UP'S RATION FOR A WEEK (it changed through the war)
Bacon or ham: 4 oz (113g)
Butter: 2 oz (57g)
Cheese: 2 oz (57g)
Margarine: 4 oz (113g)
Sugar: 8 oz (227g)
Tea: 2 oz (57g)
Fresh eggs: 1, if you were lucky
Milk: 3 pints
Plus meat by price, and 16 points a month for tins and dried fruit.
Fry the fish in a shallow pan and do the chips in the oven, never a chip pan. Cook lamb's hearts slowly until they're tender. When you steam a pudding, keep the water topped up and never let the pan boil dry.
