Where American Airlines Cabin Crew Sleep on a 17-Hour Flight On American's longest flights, flight attendants get a three hour break in a bunk hidden right above the back rows of economy. On the Boeing 787-9 that flies American's longest routes, Dallas Fort Worth to Brisbane and Delhi to New York, the answer is a bunk room in the ceiling at the back of the plane, behind a locked door that looks like a closet. We cover the FAA's 2010 special conditions for the Dreamliner's overhead crew rest, the 2024 flight attendant contract that sets American's 787 bunks down to the inch, and how the minimum crew is worked out. Then the rotation: on flights scheduled at 14 and a half hours or more, the standard break is three hours, with up to four flight attendants resting at once, and the purser decides who goes first. We also look at the A321XLR's curtained crew seats next to the lavatory, the 10-hour rest rule after landing, and what more than 9,000 flight attendants told FAA researchers about fatigue in 2009.
