The Story (Luke 19:1-10) The Setup: Jesus was passing through Jericho, and Zacchaeus, a chief tax collector (and thus disliked), wanted to see Him but couldn't due to his short stature and the crowd. The Climb: Zacchaeus ran ahead and climbed a sycamore fig tree to get a better view. The Call: Jesus stopped beneath the tree, looked up, and said, "Zacchaeus, come down! I must stay at your house today". The Reaction: Zacchaeus quickly came down, overjoyed, and welcomed Jesus. The crowd grumbled, "He has gone to be the guest of a sinner". The Transformation: Zacchaeus stood and declared he would give half his belongings to the poor and repay four times over anyone he had cheated. Jesus' Declaration: Jesus responded, "Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost". Meaning Inclusion: Jesus reached out to a despised "sinner," showing God's love and provision to any one who calls out His name.
