Jesse James: How a Confederate Guerrilla Became America’s Robin Hood

On April 3, 1882, Robert Ford shot Jesse James from behind inside a rented house in St. Joseph, Missouri. The outlaw died at 34. The story that survived turned him into a betrayed hero—and, eventually, an American Robin Hood. This documentary tests that legend against the record. It follows Jesse from a slaveholding household in Missouri's Little Dixie through Confederate-aligned guerrilla warfare, the Centralia massacre, Reconstruction, disputed and attributed bank raids, John Newman Edwards's political mythmaking, the Pinkerton campaign, the Northfield disaster and the final betrayal in St. Joseph. The evidence supports a harsher conclusion than the folklore. There is no reliable record that the James gang systematically gave stolen money to the poor. Jesse's Robin Hood identity was built through post-Civil War politics, sympathetic newspaper coverage and repetition—while the people killed during robberies were pushed out of the story.
