In this video I explore how Julian Casablancas uses AutoTune, and his diss of Anthony Fantano, on “Lonely in the Future”, off the new album Reality Awaits by The Strokes. We’ll talk about melodies, riffs, and chords. We’ll talk about how even though the song uses the famous Strokes chords, the “Secret sauce” chords, Julian and Albert Hammond Jr. write new melodic ideas, particularly Julian’s chorus melody, which descends first, rather than taking the usual ascending route. We also talk about how Fab Moretti’s drum beats are more complex than they were on The New Abnormal. Please share your thoughts in the comments.
