“The You You Are Today” is a country love song about loving someone through every version of who they’ve been, while realizing that the person standing in front of you right now is the one you love most. The phrase “the you you are today is my favorite you” originally came from my children’s books, where it describes the way we love our children as they grow and change. I actually started writing this song for my kids, but at 4 a.m. in a quiet house, the more I thought about those words, the more I realized they perfectly described how I feel about my husband. We’ve grown and changed through the years, and I’ve loved every version of him along the way. But love isn’t only about looking back at who someone was or ahead to who they might become. It’s about being in love with the person standing beside you right now.
