A window is not built to keep water out. It is built to let water in, hold it for a moment, and hand it back outside through a drain path most homeowners have never looked at. That one fact is why so many $20,000 replacement window quotes get signed by people whose windows were never the problem.
In this video I walk through the five mistakes that turn a working window into a whole house replacement contract. Sealing the drain path shut with caulk. Blaming the window for indoor humidity you created yourself. Letting one fogged double pane condemn an entire unit. Letting the clock run out on a warranty you already paid for. And judging the window instead of the path the water takes out of it. One of those five is what turns the other four into a tear out, and it is not the one you would pick.
I'm Hank. Twenty eight years of renovations and home inspections starting in 1998, better than ten thousand homes walked. No sponsors, no brand money, nobody paying me to move a window. A glass swap is a $347 invoice at a local shop. A whole house replacement is a $21,340 contract with financing attached. Both are honest work when they are the right call. Only one of them has a sales force, a call center and a monthly quota, so when you show up already convinced your windows are shot, nobody in that building has a reason to talk you down.
Before you sign anything, go find the weep holes on the bottom of your window frames and tell me in the comments whether they are open or painted shut. Subscribe if you would rather diagnose your house than replace it.
