Most farmers plant sweet potatoes in big heaps or mounds. It's hard work and the harvest is often small. Here's how we plant sweet potatoes on flat ground with Farming God's Way, using a thick mulch we call God's Blanket.
We start by asking farmers in Uganda why sweet potatoes are planted in heaps (Penneniah, James, Isaac and Joel). Then Klint walks you through the whole method, step by step, at our Uganda demonstration training farm.
WHAT YOU'LL NEED (per the video)
Mulch (God's Blanket): at least 10 cm (4 in) thick
A rope marked every 60 cm (24 in)
Furrows 15 cm (6 in) deep
Wood ash: 1 tablespoon every 60 cm (24 in)
Compost or manure: 500 ml (17 oz, about 2 cups) every 1 m (40 in)
Cover the manure with soil, leaving the furrow 10 cm (4 in) deep
Vine cuttings 30 cm (12 in) long, leaves removed from the bottom 2/3, wrapped in wet newspaper and kept in the dark about 3 days until roots appear
Plant 2 vines per 60 cm (24 in), each in a J shape: 10 cm (4 in) along the bottom, 10 cm (4 in) up, 10 cm (4 in) above ground
