The first person he ever told shook his head and took a different road.
His name was Upaka, a wandering ascetic on the road out of Gaya. He asked the stranger who his teacher was, and got the largest claim anyone has ever made out loud: "I have no teacher. No one like me is found. I am the one who has woken up." Upaka's reply is preserved word for word — "It may be so, friend" — and then he walked off.
The tradition could have cut that out. It kept it. Buddhism opens with a man who did not buy it.
Part 6 of The Life of the Buddha is about what it costs to be right and have nobody listen. The two men he most wanted to tell were both dead: Alara Kalama by seven days, Uddaka Ramaputta by a single night. So he walked roughly 250 kilometres to Isipatana to find five men who had called him a quitter — and who agreed among themselves, watching him come up the path, not to stand, not to greet him, not to take his bowl. The oldest text records the collapse in one plain line: they were not able to keep to their own agreement.
What he said to them in that deer park is the oldest sermon in Buddhism, and it does not start with a god or a soul. It starts with two things he says do not work — a life chasing pleasure and a life punishing the body — and his only qualification for saying it is that he has lived both to the end. Then the middle way, the eight practices, and four truths turned three times each.
It ends in the dark, with five men listening. Four are following the argument. In the fifth, something else is happening.
