How a 134-Pound Freight Train Shattered a 30-Year World Record: The Legend of Dr. Fager
In the golden age of twentieth-century American turf history, three Hall of Fame titans collided: 1966 Horse of the Year Buckpasser, 1967 Horse of the Year Damascus, and Tartan Stable's towering 16.3-hand dark bay dynamo Dr. Fager—a horse who physically refused to let any rival breathe in front of him.
Named after Boston neurosurgeon Dr. Charles A. Fager, who saved trainer John Nerud's life from a fatal skull blood clot at the Lahey Clinic in 1965—and saved in turn when Nerud personally cut out the colt's infected stitches at midnight with a pocket scalpel—Dr. Fager became the target of the most ruthless tactical rabbit wars in racing history as rival camps sent sacrificial pacemakers like Hedevar to bait him into suicidal :22 1/5 fractions.
Yet on August 24, 1968, in the $100,000 Washington Park Handicap at Arlington Park before 38,243 spectators, carrying a crushing 134 pounds over a drying dirt strip with no pacemaker to tow him, Dr. Fager and jockey Braulio Baeza tore through splits of :22 3/5, :44.0 flat, and 1:07 4/5 to stop the clock at 1:32 1/5—winning by ten lengths, shattering the world record for thirty years, and sweeping an unprecedented four national championships in a single season.
