Why Everyone Wants To Be Black (Until t's Time To Be Black)

Apparently There’s New Black People in Town… What does it actually mean to be Black—and who gets to decide? In this video, I react to the conversations surrounding Fat Joe, 1900Rugrat, Belly Gang Kushington, Rachel Dolezal, Cardi B, Jennifer Lopez and others who have identified with, been described as, or made comments about Black identity. There’s a difference between appreciating Black culture, growing up around Black people, and actually being Black. My issue is when Blackness becomes something people can seemingly put on when it gives them cultural credibility, allows them to use certain language, or makes their story more interesting—while being able to step away from that identity when the negative realities associated with being Black show up. This isn’t about telling anybody what music they can make, who they can hang around, or what culture they can appreciate. It’s about the difference between participating in Black culture and actually living life as a Black person. These are my opinions and commentary.
