Jean Seberg: The Hollywood Star Targeted by an FBI Campaign

She was a seventeen-year-old from Marshalltown, Iowa, chosen from thousands of girls to star in a Hollywood epic. She became the face of French cinema in Breathless. And then the FBI decided to destroy her. This is the true story of Jean Seberg, the actress whose support for the civil rights movement made her a target of COINTELPRO, J. Edgar Hoover’s secret counterintelligence program. In 1970, a false rumor about her unborn child was planted in the press. Days after it was repeated in Newsweek, she went into premature labor, and her baby daughter lived only two days. Nine years later, Jean was found dead in a car in Paris. Her ex-husband, the writer Romain Gary, publicly blamed the FBI, and the bureau later acknowledged its role in the campaign. In this video, we follow her whole story: her Iowa childhood, the Otto Preminger casting search for Saint Joan, the French New Wave, her marriage to Romain Gary, her activism, the smear campaign, her final years, and the legacy she left behind.
