Before entering professional wrestling, Penzel joined the U.S. Army as a teenager and became a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division. While working as a mechanic, he met Hulk Hogan, which inspired him to pursue a career in professional wrestling. He debuted in WWF as R.T. Reynolds and later became Corporal Kirchner, remaining with the company from 1984 to 1987. He also made brief appearances for NJPW between 1989 and 1990. In 1991, he adopted the Leatherface character, inspired by the killer from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. He arrived in Japan in 1992 with W★ING Promotions after working in Puerto Rico, quickly becoming one of the most spectacular figures in Japanese hardcore wrestling. His entrance was especially chaotic: wearing a mask resembling the movie character, he would chase fans while wielding a chainsaw. On December 20, 1992, he faced Mitsuhiro Matsunaga in a nail-board deathmatch, considered the first of its kind in Japan since Antonio Inoki vs. Umanosuke Ueda in 1978.
