Our Trip to Hoenderdaell Zoo 🇳🇱 Anna Paulowna, The Netherlands 30 July 2025 Welcome to Mark’s Wanderlust. On 30 July 2025, we visited Hoenderdaell Zoo, also known as Dierenpark Hoenderdaell, in Anna Paulowna in the Netherlands. This was a lovely day trip close to home, but still one of those places where you can step away from daily life and enjoy nature, animals and a relaxed walk through a beautiful park. Hoenderdaell is not just a standard zoo. The park started as a private love for nature and animals and slowly grew into one of the most special animal parks in the Netherlands. What once began as a green project in the Anna Paulownapolder has become a large nature and animal park where animal welfare, space and education are very important. The park is located on Landgoed Hoenderdaell, in an area that was once part of the Wadden landscape. Today it feels open, green and peaceful, with wide paths, water, trees and many places where you can simply slow down and enjoy being outside. What makes Hoenderdaell special is the mix of zoo, nature park and animal rescue. You can walk through different animal areas, see ring-tailed lemurs, squirrel monkeys, alpacas, birds, reptiles, big cats and many other animals. Some parts feel more like walking through a natural landscape than visiting a traditional zoo. There is also a lot to do during a visit. You can walk through the park, enjoy the animal areas, visit the lorikeet garden, feed the colourful lori birds, watch the lemurs during feeding moments and see the bird demonstration in the Avitorium. The bird arena is built around more natural behaviour, so the birds are not just shown as a trick, but as animals with their own instincts and freedom. Another important part of Hoenderdaell is Stichting Leeuw, where large cats such as lions and tigers are given a better life. Here you can learn more about rescued big cats and, when available, see the special hunting simulator. It helps the animals use their natural behaviour again and gives them exercise and enrichment. Hoenderdaell is also home to SOS Dolfijn, an organisation that helps porpoises, dolphins and whales in need. This gives the park an extra educational side, because it is not only about seeing animals, but also about understanding why protection and rescue work matters. For families there are also playgrounds, walking routes and plenty of space to explore. For photographers and nature lovers, Hoenderdaell is a great place too, because the park feels spacious and relaxed. You can take your time, watch the animals and enjoy the atmosphere without that rushed city-zoo feeling. And of course, a good day out needs food and drinks. Inside the park there are places to stop for something to eat or drink. Near Stichting Leeuw there is a large restaurant that is open throughout the year, with sandwiches, snacks, fries and drinks. In the high season there is also Spa Groen, a second food and drink point halfway through the park. So yes, you can survive the wildlife adventure with coffee and fries — very Dutch, very necessary. For us, this was a peaceful and enjoyable visit in Anna Paulowna. A simple day out, but exactly the kind of memory that belongs on Mark’s Wanderlust: real places, real moments and another little adventure added to the journey. The Netherlands has more to offer than only big cities, canals and beaches. Places like Hoenderdaell Zoo show that you can also find nature, wildlife, rescue work and beautiful day trips close to home.
