Vocal Strength Coach Reacts to DIMASH - The Story of One Sky | FIRST TIME

My fifth Dimash reaction, and somehow he has now given me five performances that feel completely different from one another. This time it was “The Story of One Sky” live, and once again I found myself focusing on just how extraordinary his control is. One of the biggest things that continues to fascinate me is Dimash’s breath control, especially in his quieter and lower singing. For most people, the beginning of a vocal sound can feel almost like flipping a switch. There is silence, and then suddenly there is a note. With Dimash, the onset can be so gentle and controlled that the sound seems to materialize. Sometimes you barely realize the note has started until it is already there. And this performance went far beyond delicate singing. I heard screams, what sounded to me like a false-fold growl, possible throat-singing techniques, huge dynamic changes, and an incredible theatrical performance on top of all of it. I also wrestled with the question of how you even classify a singer like Dimash. I’m not a vocal coach, I’m a Vocal Strength Coach, so I would love to hear from experienced vocal coaches and singers in the comments. If I were absolutely forced to attach one label to him, my instinct would be countertenor, with a very large asterisk attached, because reducing what he does to one conventional voice type almost feels inadequate. Five Dimash songs down, and I still feel like I have no idea what he is going to show me next.
