The country is dealing with severe electricity shortages, fuel problems, a collapsing currency, falling tourism, high inflation and mass emigration — while pressure from the United States has intensified through sanctions and restrictions on countries supplying Cuba with oil. At the same time, Cuba’s traditional support network is weakening. Venezuela, which historically supplied heavily subsidised oil to the island, is no longer providing the same lifeline, while Russia remains politically supportive but is not in a position to replace the enormous economic backing once provided by the Soviet Union. In this video, I look at the latest developments in the Cuban economy, why the US embargo and sanctions remain in place, what would actually need to happen for them to be eased or removed, how the changing relationship with Venezuela and Russia is affecting Cuba, and whether the government’s new market reforms can prevent the crisis from getting even worse. I also look at one of Cuba’s biggest long-term problems — the huge wave of emigration that has seen large numbers of younger Cubans leave the country — and ask how an economy can recover when so much of its working-age population has already gone.
