In 2002, a limestone bone box carved with five Aramaic words, "James, son of Joseph, brother of Jesus," was presented to the world as the first physical link to the family of Jesus of Nazareth. Within a year, the Israel Antiquities Authority called the inscription a modern forgery, and police arrested its owner, the collector Oded Golan.
This documentary follows the James Ossuary from a cracked cardboard box in Toronto to a seven-year forgery trial in Jerusalem. We look at the patina tests, the oxygen isotope readings, the prosecution expert who admitted ancient patina inside the word "Jesus," and the 2012 verdict that cleared the defendants without declaring the box authentic.
We also look at what the gospels, Paul and the historian Josephus say about James the Just, the disputed Talpiot tomb theory, the statistics of ancient names, and the police silicone mold that may have damaged the very evidence that could have settled the case.
