*A2 Physics 9702 | Cambridge International A Level Physics*
In this lecture, we explore *Gravitational Potential Energy* for Cambridge International A Level Physics (9702), building on the familiar O Level concept and developing the formula used when objects are far from the Earth's surface.
We discuss why the familiar formula \(E_p=mgh\) is not suitable for large distances from Earth, where gravitational field strength \(g\) is no longer approximately constant, and introduce the gravitational potential energy formula:
Topics covered in this lecture:**
Revision of gravitational potential energy and the \(mgh\) formula
Why \(mgh\) is unsuitable at large distances from Earth
The meaning of infinity in a gravitational field
Defining gravitational potential energy relative to infinity
Gravitational potential energy at a distance \(r\) from Earth's centre
The formula \(E_p=-\frac{GMm}{r}\) and the quantities it represents
Change in gravitational potential energy: \(\Delta E_p=-\frac{GMm}{r^2}\Delta r\) in differential form, and the corresponding finite-change relationship
How gravitational potential energy changes when an object moves towards or away from a planet
The relationship between changes in gravitational potential energy and kinetic energy
Reference points and why gravitational potential energy is negative
A conceptual summary to prepare for past-paper questions
