Welcome back to Barely a Gamer! So another Xbox 360 port has landed today and this one is a genuinely beloved classic. Castlevania Lords of Shadow is now being ported to Nintendo Switch by FurryLilManChild, and with Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse having just released earlier this month, the timing on this one is really interesting for fans of the series.

A Beloved Entry in the Castlevania Universe
Castlevania: Lords of Shadow was developed by MercurySteam in collaboration with Kojima Productions and published by Konami, releasing in October 2010 on PS3 and Xbox 360. It is a third-person action adventure game that took the Castlevania series in a dramatically different direction, delivering a dark and cinematic reimagining of the franchise’s lore. You play as Gabriel Belmont, a warrior of the Brotherhood of Light who embarks on a quest to defeat the Lords of Shadow and resurrect his murdered wife. The game drew heavy comparisons to God of War for its over the shoulder combat style and epic scale, and featured an outstanding cast with Robert Carlyle voicing Gabriel and Patrick Stewart delivering a memorable performance as Zobek. The world design is absolutely stunning with enormous gothic environments and some of the most impressive visual set pieces of the entire seventh generation. It is a game that divided classic Castlevania fans at launch but has built a devoted following over the years and is now widely regarded as a genuinely great game in its own right.
Performance on Nintendo Switch
Here is the fully honest picture and I want to be clear that this port is not ready to play right now. Without overclocking I was getting around 10 to 12 FPS during both cutscenes and actual gameplay, with significant stutters and lag throughout. Not playable at all in stock configuration. After overclocking to maximum speed using SysClk the performance improved somewhat, reaching around 18 to 20 FPS with occasional dips down to around 15 FPS. Still not playable for a game like this. If you push further with 4IFIR or Ultra NX you may be able to squeeze some additional performance out on top of that, but based on everything I experienced right now I would strongly recommend not trying this port yet. Give it more time and more optimisation work from FurryLilManChild before diving in.
What to Expect Going Forward
The Switch homebrew community has consistently shown that ports improve dramatically over time with continued development, and Castlevania Lords of Shadow is absolutely worth watching. The game would be a brilliant handheld experience when fully optimised and I genuinely hope this port gets the attention it needs to get there. Keep a close eye on the GitHub for updates.
